A security USB Token is a physical device which facilitates the access of a user to computer services.
The device, known as USB security token, USB hardware token, USB hard token, USB authentication token, USB Token, USB cryptographic token or key fob, can sometimes refer also to a software token.
The security USB Token is used to electronically prove a user's identity, for instance when the owner tries to access his or her bank account. The USB Token is used in addition to replace a password to prove that the user is who he or she claims to be. The USB Token acts like an electronic key to access a service.
The hardware usb token is small enough to be carried in a pocket and is designed so that it can be attached to a key chain. USB Tokens can store cryptographic keys, like digital signatures or biometric information, such as fingerprints.
In some cases, the package design allows the token to be used in harsh conditions, while in others the token can include a small keypad for introducing a PIN code or a simple start button which allows the launch of an application to generate a random number to be read on a display screen. The token may have a USB connector, RFID functions or Bluetooth wireless interface to allow the transfer of the generated key to the client system.
